Musiala and Gundogan on Target as Hosts Secure Progression

Germany have secured their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 victory over Hungary in Munich. Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan were on target for the hosts, who now need just a point from their final group game against England to top the table.

Hungary's Winless Streak Continues

Hungary, meanwhile, are now without a win in eight EURO matches, dating back to their 2-0 victory over Austria in their opening fixture of Euro 2016. The Hungarians had their chances to take something from the game, but they were ultimately undone by Germany's clinical finishing.

Musiala Breaks the Deadlock

The hosts took the lead in the 23rd minute when Musiala collected a pass from Kai Havertz and drove into the Hungary box. The Bayern Munich forward then slotted home a low shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Gundogan Seals the Win

Gundogan doubled Germany's lead in the 52nd minute, sweeping home a rebound after Havertz's initial shot had been saved. The goal effectively sealed the win for Germany, who were never really troubled by Hungary in the second half.

Missed Chances for Hungary

Hungary had a chance to equalize in the first half when Roland Sallai had a goal ruled out for offside, but they could not find a way past the German defense thereafter. The Hungarians had a number of other decent chances, but they were unable to make the most of them.

Germany March On

Germany's victory means that they have now qualified for the last 16 of the European Championship for the 17th time in a row. The hosts will be confident of topping their group if they can avoid defeat against England in their final group game.
